Getting Rid of an Old Computer?
Wipe the Drive First . . . |
There has been a request to write out the directions that were given at the March SMUG meeting for wiping a computer's drive before getting rid of it. So here goes:
- You will have to first boot from the CD that came with your computer or from an attached external drive. Once there, open up the Disk Utility Application (it's usually found under one of the menu items appearing at the top of your screen).
- Select the drive you want to erase
- Here is what the Disk Utility window looks like:
- Next, click on the button named "Security Options". That will bring up the following dialog box:
- Choose "Zero Out Data"
- Click OK to go back to the previous dialog box.
- Then, click on the "Erase" button
- This will totally erase your entire hard drive
- You may want to install the operating system that came with your computer for future use.
